A 2021 Survival Guide
Much like any other year, as the proverbial ball dropped at midnight on December 31st 2020, we began to reflect on the year that had been and anticipate what the coming year might bring.
But unlike many other years, as we entered 2021, we carried with us a sense of existential exhaustion. Unfortunately, the problems of 2020 followed us into this new year with a renewed sense of vigour. And so, we find ourselves at home (again), on zoom (again) and thoroughly sick of the lot of it.
So how do we foster excitement for a future that is so uncertain?
What can we do, from within our homes, to thrive and not simply survive? When your kitchen is also your office, your living room a classroom and ‘flexi-time’ has taken on a life of its own it’s important to remember where work ends, and you begin.
In 2021, the most forthcoming trend we see is not dark painted walls or velvet upholstery, but boundaries. When we say boundaries, we don’t just mean in work, we mean in your home and in yourself, too. Boundaries allow you to control the controllable, to invite mindfulness, luxury and comfort back into your home and relationships.
Working from Home or Living at Work?
Following nearly a year of remote working it’s natural to feel what is commonly referred to as ‘work-from-home fatigue’. A day begun working at your desk or dining table, can end arranged haphazardly against throw cushions and pillows in bed. Looking to the future, remote working is set to remain prevalent and just as it was when lockdown began in March 2021, it is increasingly important to define your home working space.
Though it may be difficult to resist the pull of a 12-tog duvet and duck down pillows, it is necessary. Not only is working from your bed not conducive to productivity but defining spaces within the home also helps to keep varying aspects of your life separate.
Redefine your Workspace
Confining work to a designated area, be that a home office, a desk or the end of your dining table, allows the remainder of your house to remain a home. When you close your computer down at the end of the day, your surrounding living spaces are free to serve their intended purpose.
But how do you make the allure of your workspace more appealing than the pull of your sumptuous sofa? Just because a spaces intention is for work, does not mean it needs to be devoid of all character. Investing in atmospheric accessories for your workspace has both immediate and long-term benefits.
Ordinarily, in offices up and down the country we would add trinkets and personal artefacts to our desks to counteract the uniform sterility of the space. The plus side of working in your own home is that the opportunities to decorate your own home are near limitless, unrestricted by company policies or bland office design.
Luxury Home Shop is a one stop portal for luxury interiors and accessories; from frames to diffusers and lamps to throws you can find a number of goods to add opulence and splendour to your home office. And if there’s something you’re coveting that isn’t available online, contact a member of the Luxury Home team who will go above and beyond to source it for you.
Create ambience within your space by using scented candles to manifest a peaceful and luxurious space. On dark gloomy days, create a lighter and brighter atmosphere with scents like Baies de Suisse; a fresh and fruity candle with notes of breezy summer meadows. For stressful days, channel your inner zen with dry and warming scents of Musk & Aoud; a sultry mix designed to calm with every inhalation.
Serenity cannot be achieved by scent alone, though. Control the internal chaos by efficiently managing the external. On average, people working at an organised desk are able to concentrate for longer spans of time without losing focus. It has also been suggested that a tidy desk can do anything from increase job performance and reduce stress, to improve mental stability and sleeping habits.
Whilst the mere mention of ‘storage’ is unlikely to ensue rabid excitement, there is more to spatial organisation than bulky filing cabinets and plastic wallets. Bring a renewed sense of luxury and glamour to your ‘in-tray’ by tailoring your organisation solutions to your home’s existing interior design. Shop our range of sleek storage trays online to begin creating a space that’s both beautiful and practical.
For a softer and more understated finish, the Gio Tray Set in Shagreen & Braided Taupecomplete with luxury brass detailing is a chic and elegant addition to your home office. Two contrasting trays in warm neutral tones add a delicate designer touch, perfect for solid wood desks and natural stone dining tables alike.
Alternatively, a pop of colour never fails to brighten the working day. In a busy family home, try adding the Orange Croc Lacquered Tray. Featuring 20 coats of hand polished high gloss lacquer, this bold storage solution packs heaps of style whilst maintaining durability and function.
If a refined, monochromatic scheme is more your speed then we recommend the Paragon Large Tray. Crafted from carbon wood and finished in French grey leather with a gilt metal trim, it offers heritage luxury with a polished edge.
Curating a structured and motivational workspace fit for your individual purpose can itself be stress inducing. And here is where those all-important boundaries come in; you don’t need to exert yourself curating your dream home. Invest in great service. At Luxury Home Management we aim to remove the stress from creating your dream home. Whether it be providing household staff to help you run your home, or sourcing pieces to bring your home to life the team are dedicated to finding a solution that works for you. Services range from providing individual accessories, found at the Luxury Home Shop, to full Interior Design services.
Boundaries in your home extend far beyond simply restricting work to a dedicated space. Enforcing boundaries upon your working hours is vital, too. It is understandably difficult to balance work and home life in the current climate; with unrestricted access to our emails via phones and laptops and an inability to gain physical distance from our work, perhaps it’s not just children who can benefit from structured screen time. The importance of downtime and digital detoxing has never been more profound.
Your bedroom is designed for life outside the 9-5; a place of solace and comfort to shake off the worries of the day. Consider it an act of self-care to invest in turning your bedroom into a sanctuary, where zoom meetings and urgent emails cease to exist.
Unsurprisingly, the forecasted interior design trends for this year are geared towards creating a comforting and nurturing environment. From mixing modern with vintage, to layering texture and maximising natural light, these are the top ways for homeowners to refresh their bedroom oasis.
In the colder months, additional soft furnishings are key to building a retreat you can burrow into. This stunning baby alpaca and silk throw blanket is handcrafted from the softest baby alpaca wool and silk. The combination of the green and blue strands in the weave creates a rich peacock blue, subtly introducing the trend of dark earthy tones to your room.
Inspired by Nordic and Scandi trends, structured simplicity is style stripped back. The aim is to create a comfy, chilled-out space to relax in, making homes a safe, inviting space to rest and regenerate. Neutral brown and beige hues, like that of the Herringbone Beige Nettle Cushion are calm and palatable, coupled with tactile comforts like the Claudette Cream Silk & Feather Cushion they make a sumptuous and inviting refuge.
In addition to accessorising, lighting is also an extremely beneficial way to alter the mood within a room. Where you may require a cooler light in your workspace to stay alert, in your bedroom lighting can be both softer and warmer. Utilising accent lighting, as opposed to ceiling fixtures, can make a bedroom feel more welcoming and relaxed.
Transparent materials create a feeling of light and space rather than clutter, removing barriers for the eye and opening up a room. Placing glass lamps on your bedside table invites a sense of minimalist serenity, ideal for winding down in the evenings.
But glass is also very versatile: it can be subtle or showy, contemporary or classic. The Macy Tinted Glass Table Lamp’s refined and timeless design slots seamlessly into both classic and contemporary interiors. The softly tinted glass base shows the finer details of the antique brushed brass. With a beautiful neutral sage shade, this lamp provides elegance with an industrial edge.
As 2021 presses on, we can see by all accounts that natural stones such as Marble, Concrete and Terrazzo remain on trend. With distinctive veining and versatile textures, these materials have solidified their status within architecture, interiors and furniture alike due to an effortless ability to speak luxury and sophistication into a design. The Rae White Marble & Antique Brass Table Lamp adds a touch of edge with softer and more palatable detailing fit for a bedroom.
These small investments can make an enormous difference to how you exist within your home. Setting boundaries is a radical act of self-care; it places you at the centre. This is never more prevalent than at home. You are the heart of your home; it should be reflective of you and how you want to live. A great way to feel fulfilled at home is to invest in bringing your home to life.
Bespoke furniture is the primary way to ensure that your personality is reflected in your home. Customised pieces incorporate the style, form and function that is best suited not only to your needs but your desires.
The versatility of fully customisable pieces, like our Andes Armchair, can drastically lift the mood of the room. For instance, upholstered in a worn natural leather the Andes offers classic heritage with a luxury edge. But in a contrasting velvet hue, this bold armchair packs a punch of contemporary style.
Creating customised furniture offers flexibility of design and this really comes into its own for livening up dead space. Combining quality materials, unique design and high-end fixtures will maximise impact and fully utilise any space. The William Lounge Chair, for example, boasts an entirely singular silhouette. Drawing inspiration from the classic Chesterfield, this boxy armchair draws the eye to its angular edges and intricate button detailing. Coupled with its made-to-order potential, the William Lounge Chair makes quite the statement. And, with special trade pricing available, you can pay competitive prices for premium product.
Throughout the design process for bespoke pieces, it is important that your designer works closely with you to understand your needs. Personal service is paramount to ensuring that all these aspects come together. This is why in 2021 another great boundary to practice is time investment; invest in companies that value your business, that relish the opportunity to help you and commit to your vision. Luxury Home Management & Luxury Home Shop work together to put you, the customer, first. As a company, they handle everything from luxury home styling to staffing, inviting ease back into your day-to-day life.
